Featured collection: Practicing governance towards equity in health systems: LMIC perspectives and experience

The unifying theme of this new series is a concern for understanding the everyday practice of governance in LMIC health systems. The papers address governance through diverse health policy and system issues, consider actors located at multiple levels of the system and draw on multidisciplinary perspectives. The overall purpose of this series is to provide an empirical and embedded research perspective on governance and equity in health systems.

Bale Monkeys living in different areas have very different DNA

What you eat while pregnant may affect your baby’s gut

A mother’s diet during pregnancy may have an effect on the composition of her baby’s gut microbiome – the community of bacteria living in the gut – and the effect may vary by delivery mode.

BMC Research Notes Launches Data Notes

Data is becoming increasingly more important. Researchers tell us they want to share their data to progress research, to receive more credit and visibility for their work and to comply with funder policies.  To help our authors do this, we have launched the data note.

Open Access Funding Support Service

Did you know that there almost 250 open access article processing charge (APC) funds available to researchers worldwide? At BMC, we offer a free advice service to help our authors to discover and apply for funding. On our support pages you can find our OA checklist along with a list of research funders and institutions that make APC funding available.

Retrospectively registered trials

Prospective clinical trial registration aims to address publication and reporting bias. Unfortunately, not all clinical trials are registered before they start. Here we discuss the dilemma faced by editors when receiving submissions reporting a clinical trial that was not registered prospectively, and a new policy for increasing transparency when a trial was registered after participant recruitment has begun.

Through the looking glass

In this blog, Poppy Lakeman Fraser, Senior Programme Coordinator for the Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) initiative, explains what citizen science actually is and how researchers rely on this form of data collection.

Driving Reproductive Division of Labor

Romain Libbrecht, Peter Oxley, and Daniel Kronauer characterize gene expression changes underlying reproductive division of labor in raider ants, identifying candidate molecular regulators of reproduction and behavior

Tracking Ubiquitination Cascades in Real Time

Manfred Auer and colleagues developed a tool for tracking enzymatic activities, including E1, E2, and HECT-type E3 enzymes, and for monitoring multi-step reactions within ubiquitination cascades in a single experimental compartment.

Keeping TADs Whole

onas Ibn-Salem and colleagues show that topologically associating domains are conserved building blocks of genomes that are often reshuffled as a whole, instead of being disrupted by rearrangements during evolution

Network Dynamics Underlying Attention

Moein Esghaei and colleagues show that action potentials are coupled to the phase of low-frequency LFP along the dorsal visual pathway, and that attention might enhance neural representation by harnessing this spike-LFP coupling

Call for Papers – “Engineering Biology” series

We are delighted to invite submission of Research papers to our latest series, under the Guest Editorship of James Collins, Sophien Kamoun, Nicola Patron, James Wells, and Pamela Silver. For more details, please read here!
